Mexican army makes record drug seizure

May 13, 2001MEXICO CITY – Soldiers made their largest drug bust to date over the weekend, seizing more than 24 tons of marijuana from a truck-trailer in northern Mexico, the army announced Sunday.
The bust was one of three made over the weekend across northern Mexico that netted a total amount of 30 tons of marijuana and three arrests, the army said in a statement released Sunday.
In Tamaulipas state, soldiers checking a truck-trailer found 24 tons of marijuana and arrested the driver.
In Baja California, soldiers confiscated more than 5 tons of marijuana at a storage building and arrested two people.
In Sonora, soldiers seized a Cessna 182 carrying 300 kilograms (660 pounds) of marijuana. It was not clear what happened to the pilot. The army did not give further details on the busts.
