New! Travel Instruction for People with Disabilities (other than blindness)
This new program is the first baccalaureate degree program of its kind in the country. With the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act comes the right for people with disabilities to have equal access to public transportation. Along with that right comes the need for instructors who can teach orientation, independent travel, and the use of public transportation. The WMU program prepares professionals who are able to serve as these instructors.

What is travel instruction?
Independent travel instruction is a comprehensive training program designed to teach persons with disabilities how to establish and maintain orientation in their environment as they travel safely and effectively from their current location to a known destination by taking public transportation. It includes travel in indoor areas, residential neighborhoods, and rural, business, and downtown areas. While some individuals require instruction only for specific routes, others learn to develop cognitive or mental maps of street patterns and are taught to travel widely throughout the environment.
