Dickies

[78-06 01 Dickies Pool]

More than likely Stan contacted me to take photos. We went to the old Errol Flynn estate. I shot the back of "Sounds of Silence," although it's attributed to the late Jules Bates. The asshole art director, Jeff Ayeroff, is a big shot in the world of entertainment. He got there by not paying attention to little things like photo credit. The guys were touring in England when the single came out. Stan was so sweet and sorry, but he's not responsible.

That's Cherie the Penguin, front row left and Tony the Tiger, looking to his left. I hung with them and they are prominently featured in "Lexicon Devil," the excellent book on the Germs by Adam Parfrey. I still email Cherie, whom I loved to photograph.

[78-03-07 01 Dickies CPO Sharkey]

I heard about the shoot through the grapevine. Punks gathered at the Masque before going to NBC Studios in Burbank. I got on the phone and managed a photo pass. I was allowed to shoot for a few moments. Stan was so impressed I managed to get any shots. Now if I had advance notice . . . but that was punk. I always found out at the last minute and then hustled to get a photo pass. I didn't have many connections, was very shy, but this time it worked.

CPO Sharkey was a show starring Don Rickles, wherein his daughter was into punk. The only authentic thing about the show were the Dickies and the real punks, Alice Bag, Terry BagDad (Bags' drummer), Trixie, Spazz Attack and Kid Congo aka Brian Tristan. There were more, but they are all in this photo.
